Johannesburg – Every year, equestrian excellence is elevated and in true Toyota style, The Year of the Legend has landed more participants; more prize-money; more passion - all in pursuit of perfection.

With three of the country’s biggest shows having already concluded, The Year of the Legend will culminate at the 2025 Toyota South African Derby, from 1 – 5 October 2025, at the exquisite Kyalami Equestrian Park. Running from Easter this year, the shows have tested the best, resulting in legends rising to the top through their passionate partnerships, perseverance and professionalism.

“This year, we’ve honoured the horses, riders, grooms, officials, volunteers and staff - our legends, who make this sport extraordinary. Now in our fourth year of partnership with Toyota South Africa Motors, together we continue to inspire all members of the equestrian community to push beyond their limits,” says Heather Mpofu, Kyalami Park Club Show Director.

Dubbed as the “Toughest title to win”, the Toyota South African Derby is the ultimate test of athleticism, teamwork and communication. The 1200m, 18 obstacle course remains relatively unchanged since its inception in 1965 and year upon year, remains the toughest title of them all. The show covers the disciplines of showjumping, showing and dressage; and with the family fun atmosphere, this show is known as the Ultimate Equestrian Highlight. This year’s showjumping winner will trade their saddle for the seat of another legend, in the form of a brand-new Toyota Hilux Double Cab Legend, proudly sponsored by Toyota South Africa Motors.

Glenn Crompton, Vice President of Marketing at Toyota South Africa Motors, says; “Toyota is proud to continue its partnership with the South African Derby, an event that embodies the spirit of excellence, resilience and community - values that are deeply rooted in our brand. As we celebrate the 60th anniversary of this iconic competition, we’re not only honouring the legends of the sport but also inspiring the next generation of riders and enthusiasts. This year, we’re especially excited to award the showjumping winner with a Toyota Hilux Double Cab Legend – a market leader for over 50 years and a symbol of strength and performance. The Derby is more than a showcase of equestrian talent, it’s a celebration of passion, achievement and the power of partnership - on and off the field.”

A full spectrum of Equestrian Entertainment

Saturday promises to be a standout day, with free entrance for all. Highlights include the thrilling Micro Speed Derby and the newly introduced Dressage International Team Competition. “The 2025 Toyota South African Derby is set to be unforgettable. Alongside the thrilling Micro Speed Derby, this year we’ve introduced the Dressage International Team Competition, featuring a prestigious matchup between South Africa and Japan. More than a contest, it’s a celebration of friendship, cultural exchange and shared values.”

“With Japan, the birthplace of the iconic Toyota brand, competing on South African soil, the competition takes on deeper significance. It’s a powerful reminder of how sport can transcend borders to unite nations and inspire excellence. This isn’t just about riding. It’s about the heartfelt bond between two nations with rich histories and bright futures. Whether you're cheering for your team or simply eager to witness world-class dressage, this is a moment to come together and celebrate the universal language of equestrian sport,” concluded Mpofu.
