Durban, the proud home of Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM), recently hosted the annual Toyota Cup at Moses Mabhida Stadium. The event saw Kaizer Chiefs take on Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko in the main fixture, following an entertaining curtain-raiser match between the Kaizer Chiefs Legends and the Zulu Kingdom Legends.
The occasion coincided with a significant milestone for Toyota – the celebration of 55 years of Hilux in South Africa. As part of this anniversary, Toyota will start selling the Hilux Legend 55 in August 2025. It will feature Legend 55 custom styling and updated specification.
In the lead-up to this launch, Toyota saw a unique opportunity to integrate the Legends match into its pre-launch activations. Toyota’s automotive media guests were invited to experience the full match-day atmosphere. This included an exclusive behind-the-scenes glimpse into team strategy sessions, known as “Team Talks”, and the opportunity to chauffeur some of the former football greats to the stadium in the new Hilux Legend 55.
Commenting on the occasion, General Manager of Communication at TSAM Tasneem Lorgat said: “This introduction of the Legend 55 gives us a moment to reflect on the Hilux journey in South Africa, remembering that Hilux is more than just a ‘bakkie’. It has become a trusted companion for generations, adapting to the changing needs of our market.
“Aligning this milestone with the Legends game has allowed us to celebrate not only automotive history, but also football heritage. While nostalgia is a powerful emotion, we remain forward-looking – just as the Hilux continues to evolve, so too does a new generation of Kaizer Chiefs talent as we saw them in the Toyota Cup.”
In the curtain-raiser, the Kaizer Chiefs Legends emerged victorious in a dramatic penalty shootout, following a 1-1 draw in regulation time. In the main event, Asante Kotoko claimed the win, also on penalties, after an evenly contested match that ended 1-1 after full time.
The Hilux Legend 55 will officially launch in South Africa on 18 August 2025. Further product details will be announced at the launch.
