Two Toyota Hiluxes have been awarded to deserving farmers at the very top of their game. The 2019 ToyotaSA/Agri-SA Young Farmer and New Harvest of the Year awards, the 16th iteration of the competition, saw two top farmers driving away with a brand-new Toyota Hilux workhorse each. Plettenberg Bay’s Johan van der Schyff was crowned winner of the 2019 Young Farmer of the Year award while Villiersdorp’s Sewis van den Horst won the 2019 New Harvest of the Year award.

Van der Schyff breeds Angora goats and Merino sheep, runs a sheep feedlot and is involved in egg distribution in the Western and Eastern Cape, Namibia and Angola. Van den Horst farms apples, pears and nectarines.

The winners have passed through a number of rounds, first being nominated by their Agri-SA provincial councils. The finalists were then tested on a multitude of aspects, including their financial and business acumen, farming skills and proficiency in management focusing specifically on their own contribution, independence as well as decision-making authority, after which the winners were chosen.

As TSAM’s Vice President of Sales, Ernie Trautmann, puts it: “Toyota South Africa Motors has complete faith in the South African farming community, and we are also proud to be associated with Young Farmer and New Harvest Awards. We applaud Agri-SA’s commitment to the farming industry and we are grateful to our partners Conservation SA for their continued support of this prestigious event.”
