Cruising into a city near you…
The latest in Toyota’s impressive SUV line has landed in South Africa, and it goes by the city-chic name of Urban Cruiser.
With the dominance of the SUV in the local and global markets, Toyota aimed to supply an SUV that could target the affordable end of the crossover segment. The Suzuki-Toyota alliance made the development of this vehicle possible quickly and affordably, as it allows Toyota to base new, compact vehicles on existing Suzuki technology.
The result is a cracking little front-wheel-drive SUV with an abundance of character and rugged good looks, aimed at winning sales both from the hatchback market and from rivals in the compact crossover segment.
A 1.5-litre petrol engine is the only option, but it can be paired with either a five-speed manual gearbox or a four-speed automatic gearbox. The engine produces 77kW of power and 138Nm of torque, with a claimed average fuel consumption of just 6.2L/100km – impressive for a vehicle with these generous dimensions.
For a vehicle with such a competitive price tag, the Urban Cruiser is surprisingly well equipped. In keeping with Toyota’s other models, the specification grades are Xi, Xs and Xr. The Xi comes with keyless-entry with push start, electric windows all round, air-conditioning, tilt-adjustable steering, power-adjustable mirrors, LED headlamps and LED Daytime Running Lights (DRL). Rear Park Distance Control (PDC) offers drivers additional peace of mind.
The touchscreen infotainment system, standard across the range, features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which means that occupants can access and display Google Maps, Waze and Apple Maps for navigational duty while also streaming their favourite music. Bluetooth, Aux and USB inputs also feature.
Where the Xi has steel wheels with hubcaps, the Xs model gets alloy rims as well as roof rails, body-coloured door handles, power-retractable mirrors and rear window wiper with demister function. On the inside, the Xs offers climate control and reverse camera, a secondary glove compartment, rear armrest and 60:40 split backrest.
At the top of the range is the Xr model, and it gets LED fog lamps, automatic headlights, cruise control, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, rain-sensing wipers, dual 12-volt power outlets, front armrest, leather steering wheel and the inclusion of two tweeter speakers.
In terms of safety, no model does without, and all three have ABS braking with EBD, side protection beams, driver and passenger airbags and ISOFIX.
Finally, all models are equipped with the Toyota Connect telematics system, which includes an in-car Wi-Fi hotspot and complementary 15Gb data. Once linked to their profile, customers can manage their vehicle via the MyToyota App. This intuitive app allows on-demand service bookings, vehicle information and history, tracking data as well as Toyota Connect data recharge services and much more.
Standard across the Urban Cruiser range are a 3-services/45 000 km service plan and a 3-year/100 000km warranty. For more information see www.toyota.co.za.
