The Corolla Cross is coming

What do you get when you combine the most popular car brand of all time with the most popular trend of current times? That's right – a Toyota Corolla SUV, which is called the Corolla Cross to fit in with the Japanese brand's naming conventions.

The great news is that Corolla Cross will be arriving in South Africa very soon, at the beginning of October 2021. Here are five things we know about the Corolla Cross so far:

  • There are two engine options: a petrol and a petrol-electric hybrid. The 1.8-litre petrol engine is also used in the Corolla and Corolla Quest and produces 103kW and 173Nm. It will be paired with a 7-step CVT transmission. The hybrid uses the same drivetrain as the Toyota Prius, C-HR Hybrid and Corolla Hybrid - a 1.8-litre petrol engine mated to an electric powerplant for combined figures of 90kW and 163Nm, and sensational fuel economy of a mere 4.3L/100km.
  • It is built locally at the Prospecton plant in Durban. This is the first time that Toyota is building a hybrid vehicle on South African soil.
  • Toyota South Africa Motors’ (TSAM) invested over R2 billion in the Prospecton assembly plant in preparation for manufacturing the Corolla Cross. The project also benefitted staff in terms of major upskilling projects.
  • The Corolla Cross will slot in above the C-HR and below the RAV4 models, both in terms of size and powertrain configuration.
  • The Corolla Cross is built on the TNGA platform (GA-C), which has enabled the Corolla Cross to achieve high-quality performance, a comfortable ride, and outstanding quietness.
