More of the good stuff for the Fortuner
It’s not hard to understand the Fortuner’s phenomenal success in South Africa (it sold almost 1488 units in November 2020 alone) – it is the ultimate family SUV, just as capable of overland expeditions as of the school run or the commute, and everything in between. And it has just got even better, with updates to the features, the exterior styling and even the engine.
For the first time, a ‘VX’ model is available, bringing the Fortuner in line with other Toyota SUVS, including the RAV4, Prado and Land Cruiser 200. The VX badge indicates that this is the top-tier model, and as such it has been given differentiating points on the exterior and interior. Outside, a gloss (matt on the other models) blacked out grille up front, a line of chrome down the flanks and new taillights set it apart. The interior sees heated front seats added, welcome lighting and the impressive Toyota Safety Sense system, which integrates a Pre-collision system, Lane Departure Alert, Adaptive Cruise Control and road sign recognition for heightened safety.
The addition of the VX is by no means the only change: all 2.8 GD-6 versions now boast more power and torque, up 20kW to 150kW and up 50Nm to 500Nm respectively. Towing capacity has also been increased: the 2.4 GD-6 4x4 models have seen a significant increase of 800kg, now up to 3300kg and matching that of the 2.8 GD-6 4x4 model, which has increased from 3000kg.
In terms of styling, the grille has been made bigger and is now matt black with a wavy mesh pattern. A silver skid plate complements the black grille, while reprofiled Bi-LED headlights are accentuated by chrome accent strips. LED fog lights are also a new addition, as are LED indicators. At the back, a roof spoiler and a centred Fortuner badge finish off the polished new appearance.
With the update, 2.4 GD-6 variants now also include Park Distance Control (PDC) alongside full LED lighting, cruise control and touchscreen infotainment with CarPlay and Android Auto. A new Multi-Information Display (MID) screen now includes a large, digital-speed read out and steering wheel angle indicator (for enhanced off-road usability).
The 2.8 GD-6 ‘mid-grade’ adds an electro-chromatic rear view mirror, power seat adjustment for both driver and passenger, climate control as well as rear fog lamps. A leather steering wheel, leather dashboard accents and matte wood-trim complete the interior offering.
All Fortuner models come with a 3-year/100 000km warranty. A 9-services/90 000km service plan is standard on all models.
