Lexus LS 500 review

In a world where personal attention to detail has become a rare commodity, Lexus has returned to meticulous craftsmanship and the philosophy of Omotenashi, the Japanese concept of hospitality, to create a vehicle that is like no other.

The Lexus LS 500 is the Japanese vehicle manufacturer’s hero, the most impressive vehicle in their stable and the one that showcases what Lexus is capable of when limits are removed.

Takumi are Japanese master craftsmen, and they spent countless hours perfecting and crafting the LS 500. The grille, for example, was designed over six months, with the Takumi spending eight hours a day on the design process. More than 5,000 individual surfaces were all arranged by hand, and 5,000 individual facets were each precisely calibrated to catch and reflect light. This is the kind of thing that lies behind the pursuit of excellence involved in building the LS 500, and why it is such an exceptional vehicle.

More, similar examples can be found on the interior of the LS, such as the art wood herringbone trim where individual pieces of natural wood in varied colours and grains are arranged and sliced by hand to create the delicate design.

Lexus didn’t forget about the driving experience either, and the rear-wheel drive LS shares a front-engine platform with the high-performance LC 500 coupe for a visceral, direct driving experience. The all-new front-midship design delivers exceptional balance and allows for a lower overall height and driver position, enhancing handling thanks to a lower centre of gravity. The result is sport-inspired stability, responsiveness and, ultimately, one of the most confident and engaging driving experiences Lexus has ever created. This is incredible when you consider the size of the vehicle and the level of comfort it provides.

The 3.5-litre V6 engine uses twin turbochargers to provide the power of a V8 (310kW and 600Nm), while the fuel consumption is a claimed 9.5L/100km for the combined cycle.

This power is delivered to the wheels via a 10-speed automatic transmission, complete with paddle shifters for when you want to change gear with your fingertips.

Drive Mode Select allows you match the adaptable performance characteristics of your vehicle to your situation or even mood, with six selectable drive modes (Eco, Normal, Sport, Sport S+, Comfort, Custom). Engine responsiveness, gear-change characteristics, steering and even the suspension are all tuned for economy, performance or comfort.
