A rally car for the road
The Yaris just got serious street-cred.
The Yaris just got serious street-cred. The pictures you are looking at are not the Toyota Team rally car, or a computer-generated render, or a once-off concept car built for a motor show. No, these are photographs of the actual production-ready Toyota Gazoo Racing Yaris that is available for sale in other markets and is under consideration for the South African market.
The car is modelled on the WRC Yaris, and it has to be one of the best-looking cars around. It’s got the performance to match its looks, too, with some 200kW and 370Nm generated by a turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol engine that has, interestingly, only three cylinders. Top speed is limited to 230km/h, and the 0-100km/h sprint time is a blistering 5.5 seconds, thanks in no small part to the power-to-weight ratio of 156kW/tonne.
The GR Yaris also features all-wheel-drive, a six-speed manual gearbox and a unique three-door body with coupe lines and frameless doors. It really is something special… Let’s hope the figures add up and we see a few of them on our roads in the near future.
