A new, more powerful Prado

An all-new Toyota Land Cruiser Prado has arrived in South Africa, and it features what throngs of Prado fans have been waiting for: the 2.8 GD-6 engine under the bonnet.

While the 2.8 GD-6 has been seen locally in the Hilux and Fortuner for a few years now, the Prado has soldiered on with the venerable 1KD-FTV 3-litre turbodiesel, which produces some 120kW of power and 400Nm of torque. The new engine gives the Prado quite a boost, considering that it will produce 25% more power (150kW) and 25% more torque (500Nm)! These figures have improved the overall driving experience of the Prado, most notably in overtaking performance and towing performance, while also benefitting fuel consumption. Claimed fuel consumption is just 7.9 l/100km, which means a range of close to 2000km thanks to the 150-litre fuel capacity (87-litre main tank and 63-litre sub-tank).

The braked towing capacity has also increased, from 2500kg to 3000kg on 2.8 models. Another feature that will benefit drivability is the new gearbox – a six-speed automatic gearbox has been fitted, replacing the five-speed auto of the current and previous generations.

In terms of styling, there don’t seem to be too many changes from the current generation, and it remains a seven-seat SUV with phenomenal all-round capabilities.

There is also a new-generation multimedia system with a 9-inch touchscreen display (up from 8-inch), and featuring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

All Prado models are sold with a 9-services/90 000km service plan, with 10 000km service intervals, and a 3-year/100 000km warranty. Customers can purchase an additional service plan and warranty extensions from their local Toyota dealer – and benefit from the biggest dealer network in the country (over 220).

The 4.0 V6 engine remains unchanged, and pricing for the new Prado is as below:

Prado 2.8L Diesel TX             R939,900

Prado 4.0L Petrol VX             R1,029,000

Prado 2.8L Diesel VX             R1,060,600

Prado 4.0L Petrol VX-L          R1,072,600

Prado 2.8L Diesel VX-L          R1,105,800
