42 Years of Leading Sales in SA

2021: 1 in 4 cars sold in SA was a Toyota product

2021 was a big year for Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM): not only did it mark 42 years as the best-selling automotive brand in South Africa, with a total of 117 659 units sold, but it was also a year in which more than one in every four cars sold in South Africa was a Toyota!

A grand total of 464 122 vehicles were sold in South Africa in 2021, which means that the 117 659 Toyota units sold represent 25.4% of the total market , an overwhelming statistic and a testament to the high regard the brand is held in locally. It is the pinnacle of a stellar run in which the brand has accumulated a market share of over 20% for five consecutive years.

The best-selling vehicle in the country was once again the indomitable Hilux, with a total of 36 085 units sold, mostly in double cab form. The Hiace was also a top performer, selling 15 699 units during the 12 months. The success of these two models, aided by the Land Cruiser pick-up and Dyna, meant that TSAM achieved its highest Light Commercial market share – a scarcely believable 42.2%!

The newly introduced Corolla Cross has been a star performer in the passenger segment despite being on sale only since November 2021, while the Starlet and Urban Cruiser also performed well with 12 103 and 8 899 units respectively. The end result is a market share of 19.2%  in the segment, the highest in the last 12 years.

2021 also held good news for the industry as a whole, which showed a 22.1% increase year on year from 2020, which was heavily affected by Covid 19.

TSAM also lead the pack in December, outselling everyone else in both Passenger (5603) and LCV (3699) segments for a second consecutive month, and achieving a 26.6% market share. The new Corolla Cross sold an impressive 1 752 units, the Hilux 2 426; the affordable Starlet 1 180 and the Hiace 1 024. Lexus recorded a total of 51 sales, including 20 ES and 10 RX models. Hino recorded a total of 249 sales. The 300-Series posted 150 units while the 500-Series sold 72 models.

In addition to the strong showing across the Toyota vehicle range, TSAM is also proud that its Parts’ Supply business distributed no less than 16 million items to domestic dealers, while close to 4 million pieces were shipped outside of the country in 2021.
