30 Dakars in a row for Hino

For the past 29 years, Hino vehicles have completed the most notorious, arduous and challenging off-road race in the world – the Dakar Rally. 2021 will make it 30.

The 2021 Dakar Rally will be held in Saudi Arabia from 3 – 15 January 2021, and Hino Team Sugawara is aiming for a 30thconsecutive finish in the race, as well as winning the under 10-litre engine class for trucks.

First place in this category is a very realistic goal, as a Hino has won it for the past 11 years, including last year when a four-wheel drive Hino 500 Series driven by Teruhito Sugawara, a director of Hino Team Sugawara, came 10th overall and first in its class.

The 2021 Hino racer is an updated version of that winning 2020 vehicle, featuring a number of improvements based on previous experience. The main aim is for the Hino to be

even faster in the timed special stages, which are usually dominated by monster trucks running engines much bigger than the Hino’s 9-litre, six-cylinder, turbocharged unit, which develops 550kW of power and 2 314Nm of torque.

The Dakar Rally, which after 30 years in Africa moved to South America in 2009, was held in Saudi Arabia for the first time in 2020. The route will cover close to 15 000km in the desert country, with exact routes only released at race time.
